Knowledge of Sanskrit makes it possible to grasp the subtleties of yoga, whose body of teachings are written in Sanskrit. Since ancient times the practice of yoga has included the study of Sanskrit and the chanting of Sanskrit mantras to induce calm and clarity in meditation.
Leslie Freyberg began studying Sanskrit in the early 1990s. An ongoing student of Sanskrit with Vyaas Houston, director of the American Sanskrit Institute, Leslie currently teaches at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in New York. She is also a frequent guest teacher/lecturer for Patricia Walden in Boston and other yoga centers throughout the Northeast. The joy she brings to her teaching comes from her passionate love of Sanskrit.

The Language of the
Gods
Sanskrit, the sacred language of Hinduism is one
of the oldest languages known to man. It's unique power of
expression and beauty reflect the great importance sound
had to the ancient sages. Sanskrit became the
cultured language of India. The great philosophical and
historical texts were all written in Sanskrit and the sheer
volume of Sanskrit literature is immense.

About Leslie
Leslie Dillingham Freyberg received
her first exposure to chanting, listening to the chants
and songs of the Hawaiian Islands where she was born. Her
father, Peter Dillingham, is a noted steel guitarist and a
specialist in Hawaiian music. She learned her appreciation for
the grace and beauty of dance from her mother, Tucker
Hixson, who was an accomplished Hula dancer. Leslie danced
professionally in Jean Erdman's Theater of Dance in New York.
Her initial interest in Sanskrit was inspired by Joseph
Campbell's seminars on Hindu mythology. She is a
certified Iyengar Yoga instructor and currently teaches and
lives in Redding, CT.
